Rediscovering the Great Outdoors

By: Nava Brahe

Memorial Day is finally here, and summer is beckoning with all its outdoor activities. Now more than ever, we are looking forward to spending as much time as possible outdoors. Our days of taking things like backyard barbecues, pool parties, and family reunions for granted are over. Now, not only do we want to party hearty outdoors, we also want our spaces to reflect the joyousness of our celebrations: outdoor rooms have never been in higher demand.

The hospitality industry suffered greatly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and one of the ways restaurant owners are inviting customers back to their establishments is with outdoor dining. According to Elle Décor, 2021’s hottest remodeling trend has been creating outdoor spaces inspired by dining “parklets” or “streeteries”. Alfresco dining isn’t just for resort towns or tropical islands, it can be adapted for urban restaurants that want to respect capacity guidelines while giving diners the dining out experiences they missed while in lockdown. Customers who have cottoned on to the idea are now researching additions to their homes such as outdoor dining rooms, pool houses, tree houses, gazebos, pergolas, and other gathering spots that will keep time spent indoors to a minimum.

Residential contractors and architects are currently showcasing designs as part of model homes. Those ideas are getting potential homebuyers excited about having outdoor spaces that will allow them to get closer to nature, while maintaining safe distances as we emerge from the pandemic.

The great thing about building an outdoor space is that it can multitask depending on the occasion. An outdoor dining area or gazebo can double as a summertime home office; a screened in porch or pergola can be used as a well-ventilated living room; a pool house or even a kids’ tree house can be used as a guest room or even a staycation sleepaway camp. The possibilities are endless.
